Storm season
A very strong El Niño is likely this winter. NOAA puts the odds above 90%, and California declared a state of emergency on Sept 21 to get ready. Strong El Niños often bring a wet winter here, but not always: 2015–16 was one of the strongest on record and turned out dry. Getting ready is cheap either way. NOAA's monthly update ↗
Before the rain
- Flood insurance usually takes 30 days to start, and most homeowners policies don't cover flooding. Look up your address on FEMA's flood map ↗ · FloodSmart ↗
- Clear gutters, downspouts and yard drains, and check the roof before the first storm.
- Free sandbags at Santa Clarita Valley fire stations; call ahead. Map ↗
- City alerts: text SCEMERGENCY to 888777.
- Ready for an outage: water and food, flashlights, batteries and a power bank. A generator runs outdoors only, at least 20 feet from windows, doors and the garage. Ready.gov ↗
During a storm
- Never drive or walk into moving water. Six inches can knock you over, and a foot can carry away most cars. Turn around. Weather Service ↗
- Stay off canyon roads and away from flood channels. Heavy rain on burn areas can send mud and debris downhill fast. LA County debris-flow forecast ↗
