How this list works
Only fires still marked active in the national feed (NIFC / IRWIN) — anything declared out, fully contained, or gone quiet for days is dropped. Acreage and containment come from CAL FIRE where they have the incident (small local fires often never get sized — the 🛰️ chip shows whether a NASA satellite actually detected heat there in the last 24 hours). Distances are straight-line ("as the crow flies") — the way smoke and embers travel — so they read shorter than driving miles. Fire names link to the official CAL FIRE page when there is one.

Official feeds can lag a brand-new fire by 15–30 minutes. Don't wait on this page — do this instead:
- Trust your nose. If smoke is strong, close, or getting worse — act first, verify later.
- Look with your own eyes: the ridge cameras ↗ and Watch Duty ↗ usually beat the official feeds by minutes.
- Step outside for 30 seconds. Any glow? Which direction is the smell coming from? Which way is the wind pushing?
- See flames or a smoke column? Call 911. You might genuinely be the first report — that call matters.
- If your gut says get ready: dress, load the go-bag, back the car in. Being early costs nothing; being late costs everything.
- Re-check here in ~10 minutes — this page refreshes itself, and new incidents appear as the feeds catch up. Distant smoke also drifts in from fires far away; the smoke chips above show wind direction when a fire is listed.

- Seal the house. Close all windows and doors.
- AC on recirculate. Set it to "Circulate," and switch the fan from Auto to On so it keeps filtering. Skip whole-house fans — they pull smoke in.
- Run air purifiers. Box fans help push the clean air around.
- Don't make indoor smoke. No candles, fireplace, frying or broiling, and no vacuuming until the air clears.
- Outside, wear a real N95 or N100 — snug to the face. Cloth and surgical masks don't stop smoke. N95s don't fit babies or toddlers, so keep little ones in your cleanest room.
- Drink plenty of water. Smoke dries out eyes, throat, and sinuses.
- Watch the vulnerable — kids, older neighbors, and anyone with asthma or heart or lung issues.
- If it gets thick and hot, leave for cleaner air instead of toughing it out.

Four shared water tanks in the community. Helicopters may refill here during a fire — that low, loud pass overhead is them working, not a reason to panic.

Known brush hazard. Dried brush sits in the common areas by the water towers and up Avenida Rancho Tesoro. It's the closest fuel to our homes — report it and push to clear it before peak season.

Why it matters. Last year the Hughes Fire started 6–7 mi away and its evacuation zones reached within 3–4 mi as it blew past 10,000 acres in a single day. Two fires in two years have come within about 4 miles.

The big ones since 2000: Simi '03 (107,570 ac), Ranch '07 (58,410), Sand '16 (41,383), Buckweed '07 (38,347), Powerhouse '13 (30,268), Copper '02 (19,102), Creek '17, Sesnon '08, Sayre '08, Saddle Ridge '19, Rye '17, Tick '19. And the archive lags a few years — the 2022 Route and 2025 Hughes fires aren't even in it yet.
Why this matters for the brush by the water towers: fire reaching this valley is a return interval, not a possibility. California's defensible-space standard (Public Resources Code 4291) calls for up to 100 feet of managed space around homes — clearing the common-area brush is exactly what that standard exists for.
