Seal the house. Close all windows and doors.
AC on recirculate. Set it to "Circulate," and switch the fan from Auto to On so it keeps filtering. Skip whole-house fans — they pull smoke in.
Run air purifiers. Box fans help push the clean air around.
Don't make indoor smoke. No candles, fireplace, frying or broiling, and no vacuuming until the air clears.
Outside, wear a real N95 or N100 — snug to the face. Cloth and surgical masks don't stop smoke. N95s don't fit babies or toddlers, so keep little ones in your cleanest room.
Drink plenty of water. Smoke dries out eyes, throat, and sinuses.
Watch the vulnerable — kids, older neighbors, and anyone with asthma or heart or lung issues.
If it gets thick and hot, leave for cleaner air instead of toughing it out.
